AMERICA WILL NEVER FORGET THEIR SACRIFICES.” – President Harry S Truman \nJoin the Honoring Heroes Memorial 5K•10K at the Bangor Waterfront on Sunday\, June 17\, 2018 to remember the lives of Maine’s Fallen Heroes and their Gold Star Families.  Come together in Honoring and Remembering all of Maine’s service members\, from all wars and conflicts\, who sacrificed their lives for Our Freedom; and Uniting together in support of their families.  This event is a fundraiser for the Maine Gold Star Family Memorial to be located in Augusta\, Maine’s Capitol Park. \nThe Honoring Heroes Memorial 5K•10K offers a Kids 1 Mile Fun Run\, 5K Run or Walk\, 10K Run\, Adaptive Athlete\, and Virtual options.  Veterans and Active Duty personnel are encouraged to attend\, either to walk\, run\, or line the finish with American Flags. \nA Special Tribute will commemorate the 25th Anniversary of Operation Gothic Serpent\, in which MSG Gary Gordon of Lincoln\, SSG Thomas “Tommie” Field of Lisbon\, and 17 other men sacrificed their lives on 3/4 OCT 93.  Together with his comrade\, Sergeant First Class Randy Shughart\, Gordon was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for actions he performed during the Battle of Mogadishu in October 1993.  The Battle of Mogadishu consisted of various elite special operations units from Army\, Air Force and Navy special services: U.S. Army Rangers from Bravo Company\, 3rd Battalion 75th Ranger Regiment; C Squadron\, 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (1st SFOD-D)\, better known as “Delta Force”; helicopters flown by 1st Battalion\, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment; Air Force Combat Controllers; Air Force Pararescuemen; and Navy SEALs.  Those who sacrificed their lives in October of 1993\, and their brothers in arms\, will be Honored. \nGold Star Families are encouraged to register in one of three ways.  Registration for any of the events is absolutely free! \nChildren under 18 can participate in the Kids 1 Mile Fun Run.  Please select the Gold Star Child option at registration.\nAll ages are welcome to Walk or Run in the 5K or Run in the 10K.  Please choose either of those Gold Star options at registration.\nIf you do not wish to Walk or Run\, then you are Welcome to Honor your Loved One by Standing their Memorial Marker on the Course.  Please choose this Gold Star option at registration. \nIt is our pleasure to assist in Remembering\, Honoring\, and Inspiring. \nTo register for this event\, please visit https://runsignup.com/Race/ME/Bangor/HonoringHeroesMemorial.

SUMMARY:Spartan Race: Iceland Ultra World Championship
DESCRIPTION:Event Type: Private\nSpartan Obstacle Course Race has been hosting an “honor series” this year\, highlighting the accomplishments of various US military veteran adaptive athletes. Two of these men you may have seen on the TV show Spartan Ultimate Team Challenge (Jonathan Lopez and Earl Granville). Both of these fellas are teammates with Operation Enduring Warrior (OEW) and serve on the Masked Athlete Team. \nAs the capstone to their Honor Series\, Spartan has invited 20 military veterans to compete in Iceland on Dec 16\, 2017 at the 24 hour Ultra World Championship. Lopez was tasked with assembling a team of five from each branch of the military. The course is a five-mile loop with 30 obstacles\, and the competition is to do as many laps as possible in 24 hours. The four military teams must remain together for the first lap\, where we will take Noah Currie (founder of Oscar Mike\, USMC veteran\, quadriplegic) and Joe DeSena (founder/owner of Spartan). Following the first lap\, the four military teams will begin competing against one another\, and against all of the other competitors. \nThe US military Iceland competitors will carry four tribute stones\, one for each respective branch of the Armed Forces. These stones will be carried by their assigned team on the race course for the entire 24 hours. Upon completion of the race\, the four teams will assemble\, along with support crew\, race staff\, spectators and fellow Spartans for the circle ceremony\, whereby each team captain will share the story and biography of the Maine hero on his team’s assigned stone. \nThis concept will achieve three purposes; 1) To ensure Maine heroes are not forgotten\, and their legacies are preserved in TSP fashion with stories following an arduous summit climb (in this case an ultra-marathon obstacle course in winter conditions). 2) To perpetuate our support to the surviving family members\, demonstrating to them that the loss of their loved one is not in vain\, as we continue to display our love for them during their grief. 3) To connect the efforts of various Veteran Services Organizations (OEW\, Oscar Mike) which are focused on our living veteran population with the efforts of non-profit organizations such as TSP are focused on the departed. \n  \n\nStones to be carried during this event:\nUSMC Cpl Joshua P. DESCRIPTION:Event Type: Public\nOn December 12\, the Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services\, VA Maine\, and Maine’s Vet Centers will host a first-in-the-nation Summit on Veteran Suicide Prevention. Thomas Bowman\, the Deputy Secretary for the US Department of Veterans Affairs will deliver the keynote address\, with follow on discussions regarding community resources for suicide prevention and eliminating barriers to care. Grand Marshals – Vietnam Medal of Honor Recipient\, Colonel Roger Donlon\, U.S. Army Special Forces (Retired) and his wife\, Norma\, a Vietnam-era Gold Star wife – will lead the caravan as it travels down the East Coast stopping at schools\, memorials and other locations along the way to spread the mission to REMEMBER\, HONOR and TEACH. \nThe escort is scheduled to make stops in Maine\, New Hampshire\, Massachusetts\, Connecticut\, New Jersey\, Delaware\, Maryland and Washington D.C. before arriving at Arlington National Cemetery on the morning of Saturday\, Dec. 16 – National Wreaths Across America Day. The start line and finish line are on the Avenue of Flags along the east side of the National Infantry Museum. The first 7.5 miles of the course are on Ft. Benning. From there the parade follows Main Street to State Street and ends on Exchange Street. The route is approximately 1.5 miles in total length. DESCRIPTION:Event Type: Public\nCapital Ruck Tour 2017 was created by Danny Stokes (Cadre of GoRuck) to raise awareness and support for Operation Enduring Warrior – a 100% volunteer organization composed of current and former members of the military\, family members\, and patriotic citizens who wish to give back to our nation’s wounded veterans. Beginning with Olympia\, WA in February and ending at Sacremento\, CA in November of 2017\, Stokes and other members from the community will ruck 20 miles in all 50 states across America\, ending each ruck at the top steps of every state’s Capital building. For more information about the Capital Ruck Tour visit the official website at http://capitaltour2017.com/ \n\nStarting Point:\nBelgrade Central School\n 158 Depot Rd\n Belgrade\, ME 04917 \n\nRx Ruck = Complete 20 mile ruck in the allotted 7 hr time with Danny. \nScaled Ruck = Meet Danny at the 15 mile point at 2230 (10:30pm) and finish the last 5 miles with the team. Details on the 15 mile rally point will be distributed when the route is published. \nOther Requirements:\n– $30 per participant\n– 20 lbs per ruck (or 20kgs for the big boys and big girls)\n– Ruck must have reflective belt or lights attached\, for vehicle safety\n– Each event will start at exactly 1700hrs (5pm) for Rx and 2230 (10:30pm) for Scaled\n– Time cap of 7 hours to complete with patch ceremony at the end\n– 50% of the proceeds from the event go to Operation Enduring Warrior \nAbout Operation Enduring Warrior:\nOEW offers wounded veterans the opportunity to challenge themselves through various physically challenging events.
