Fallen Maine soldiers will be remembered around the state this Memorial Day Weekend.
But one effort is gaining a tremendous amount of support.
The Summit Project is honoring 50 fallen soldiers in their weekend-long event. It begins with a convoy of more than 100 bikers and many State Police to transport stones representing Maine soldiers from Portland to Millinocket and into Baxter State Park. Hikers will then carry the stones to the top of a mountain.
People all across the state are getting involved.
âWe all as humans need to feel and want to belong to a sense of community so what this project does is it brings together people behind a very important mission,â says Major David Cote, Founder of The Summit Project.
Each Summit Project Hiker is tasked with writing a letter to the family of the soldier whoâs stone they carry to remind them that their sacrifice is not forgotten.
