Over Memorial Day Weekend, 36-48 hikers will climb various summits in Baxter State Park as part of The Summit Project’s first of two annual signature events. With every step of that climb our hikers, who have already learned about the lives of their assigned heroes, will carry with them the memorial stones of that hero making The Summit Project a living memorial. Gold Star family members of Maine’s honored fallen will join our hikers for a weekend of fellowship, healing and remembrance at Twin Pines Campground in Millinocket, Maine.

This journey begins on Saturday at the Elks Lodge in Portland, ME across from the Portland Jetport where a convoy of 100+ motorcycles escorted by the Maine State Police will transport over 75 tribute stones 200+ miles north to the town of Millinocket. Upon arrival, Gold Star families, all hikers (who should meet us at NEOC) and members of the surrounding community will be awaiting to receive these stones from our riders during our opening ceremony. On Sunday morning, 3-4 teams of 12 hikers (Red, White, Blue, Gold) will carry these stones to the summit of The Owl, or comparable trail on BSP. Once at the summit of each mountain, these teams will gather for a “Circle Testimony” where each person will share the life and the story of their fallen hero. Upon return, families will receive back the stones of these fallen heroes before closing the evening with a Warrior’s Dinner and a traditional campfire outside of the Twin Pines lodge. In 2019, this event will take place on Saturday, May 25th and end on Monday (Memorial Day), May 27th.

Cost for the weekend listed below and includes barbecue dinner on Saturday evening, breakfast Sunday morning, potlock Sunday afternoon, and dinner on Sunday night. Rates are subject to change.***

All individuals under 13 years of age are free of charge.

***TSP is responsible for all cabin assignments and bed assignments (Don’t worry Betsy Hutchins is very good at this!). Event organizers MUST know in advance both the ages and number of people attending in each “party” in order to request enough food and beds in advance for all and try to accommodate your requests.

Weekend overview and cost -- Plan for Memorial Day weekend 2019: Please plan to commit from noon Saturday (5/25) to noon Monday (5/27) On Saturday, stones arrive around 3-5pm, then a big dinner; Sunday is hike day then a homecoming reception and BBQ and BONFIRE; Monday (5/27) is breakfast and departures. Twin Pines Campground in Millinocket, Maine (30 Twin Pines Road, Fire Lane 20D, T1-R8, Millinocket Lake; (800) 634-7238) is our homebase for the weekend. The Recreation Hall will serve as our prehike planning and assembly area, our launch point, and our post-hike reception site. The Recreation Hall is reserved all day Saturday and Sunday and Monday for our non-hiking family and volunteers to gather in fellowship and community. We have also reserved cabins for lodging. Now is the time to confirm your intent to lodge overnight at Twin Pines in some pretty remarkable cabins - space is limited! It is very important that you make your intentions clear ON THIS FORM. Lodging at Twin Pines - Please choose ONE.*

- I will make ALL Lodging arrangements on my own. (Not advised, for many reasons, like logistics, subtracts from mission and experience, but we understand)
- I will take the MEAL only package; not staying at NEOC and understand the cost is $50 for Non Gold Star families and $0 for Gold Star Families
HIKERS, STAFF and NON HIKERS alike -- We have a good value package deal at Twin Pines Campground using The Summit Project block reservations. Again, the costs are Individuals (13+) Lodging & Meals - $225; Individuals (13+) Meals Only - $50; Gold Star Individuals (13+) Lodging & Meals - $100; Gold Star Individuals (13+) Meals Only - FREE; All individuals under 13 years of age are free of charge. This Lodging part of the costs covers 2 nights lodging, and 2 dinners, and breakfast on Monday morning before departures. We will potluck the other meals. ALSO, think of this arrangement as having HOUSEMATES. The cabins are all different sizes, some have private rooms, single beds, queen beds, etc. and we will figure all that out in due time. We need to know who we have first, BEFORE assigning beds/cabins. Remember, Final payment is DUE on 1 May 2017. After 1 May the price may go up $25 with each week after the deadline. For the sole purpose of counting bed spaces, how many paying adults (13+) (including you) will be in YOUR total party? ALL Minors; (those 13-18 who must pay and those <13 who are free) need guardian supervision at all times. Cabins are fully furnished and have dishware, full kitchen and linens. We will take special requests later in this form.*
