Participating in a tribute hike with TSP presents, physical, mental, and emotional challenges. To help
overcome this everyone is part of a team that supports the mission of honoring our fallen heroes. By
establishing hiker roles, the team can move safer and more efficiently. Each role plays a key part
contributing to the overall success of the mission. As well community gear such as water purification,
and first aid is shared amongst the group preventing each individual from carrying unnecessary
duplicate items.
Role Descriptions:
Team Lead: Ultimately responsible for all team communications and on trail decision making
Assistant Team Lead: Support and back-up to team lead
Logger: Tracks time at pre-determined check points as well tracks overall hiker health
Navigator: Responsible for keeping the team on the proper trail
Sweep: Performs a thorough investigation of the area after a stop or break to be sure nothing was
forgotten. Also manages water filtration
Smoother – Clears any trail debris for safe passage by the rest of the team. Also finds reroutes in
conjunction with the navigator if trail becomes impassable.
Medic: Preferably trained in wilderness first aid or medicine. Assumes immediate care for any injured.
