Troops from Maine who gave their lives in service to our nation are being honored in Lincoln.
Friday folks in town carried stones from Main Street to Machias Savings Bank, nearly two miles away.
It’s all part of the Summit Project – each stone has the initials of a fallen hero from Maine, many from the northern part of Penobscot County.
They’re carried by family members, loved ones or others who just find it imperative to remember these service men and women.
“It’s emotionally very difficult. Mentally challenging. But to be here with his family and to show support that he made the ultimate sacrifice is something as an American I’m so proud to do and to be here and to honor his family and the life and the memories that they created,” explains Kate Carey, carrying a stone.
“Warms our heart to know that we have all the support of all these people around to see us to carry these stones today and it just warms our heart to know that people still care about everybody in this country,” says Scott Harris, father of Dustin Harris, killed in combat. His parents carried a stone with his initials.
“We have to remember them,” adds Dustin’s grandfather. “Like I said, this is the face of freedom.”
This is also a way for the stone carriers to share with the community what they’ve learned about the veteran they’ve been selected to honor.
The 25 stones carried today will be on display at Machias Savings Bank on Penobscot Valley Ave. in Lincoln.
