PORTLAND (WGME) — This Memorial Day, volunteers will help honor fallen servicemen and women from Maine, taking part in a hike and special ceremony on Mt. Katahdin.
The Summit Project involves the initials of fallen service members on stones. Those stones will be taken to the summit of the mountain on Memorial Day.
Among those honored will be Capt. John “Jay” Brainard, a member of the U.S. Army who was killed in a non-combat helicopter crash while serving in Afghanistan. He was killed on Memorial Day, 2012.
Capt. Brainard’s aunt tells CBS 13 that Brainard loved climbing Mt. Katahdin, and that he climbed the mountain with his brother just before being deployed.
The hike, and ceremony, will be on Memorial Day, Monday, May 26th.
