A tribute trek this weekend helped keep the memory of Maine’s fallen heroes alive.
That’s the mission of “The Summit Project.”
It’s a living memorial which honors service members who have died serving our country since 9-11.
Family members of the fallen chose a stone to memorialize their loved one.
For the second year, the program hosted it’s weekend of remembrance.
It began Saturday with a convoy of more than 100 Patriot Riders as well as some State Police troopers who transported the stones from Portland to Millinocket.
Sunday, hikers carried those stones up to the peak of Owl, a mountain in Baxter State Park, and then shared stories about the fallen.
The video above is from TV5’s Caitin Burchill.
She hiked with the memorial stones of Moscow native Army SPC Jason Dore and Army National Guard SGT Chris Gelineau of Portland.
Once the hike was over, the stones were then returned to Gold Star families who were able to attend the ceremony.
Each Summit Project hiker is tasked with writing a letter to the family of the soldier who’s stone they carry, to remind them that their sacrifice is not forgotten.
