20 Nov 2016:
The U.S. Naval Academy’s OPINFO program, scheduled in conjunction with the Thanksgiving leave period, is one of the Academy’s most important outreach programs. Midshipmen who participate are granted extra leave to visit their local high schools and make other appearances to promote USNA. Members of the upper three classes take part. The program is an important part of the Academy’s marketing and recruiting programs. It is also an excellent opportunity for candidates to get a rare face-to-face meeting with a midshipman and hear what life is like on The Yard.
This year, three midshipmen, a sophomore, junior and senior, all with ties to Maine partnered with The Summit Project on Nov 20, 2016 for a non-hosted TSP tribute hike at Bradbury Mountain State Park.
These midshipmen were joined by family and friends and TSP core leaders, to form a group of two teams and 18 total hikers to honor the fallen while challenging the living. They hiked over 3 miles on a cold, wet day in Cumberland County, Maine.
TSP was honored to spend time with the MIDS and introduce them to TSP. Likewise, TSP hikers enjoyed hearing from the active MIDS about life at the Academy and their career goals.
It was a successful day, and together we accomplished our mission to ensure that Maine Heroes are NOT Forgotten.
