On Saturday, May 7, 2016, members of the Southern Maine community will be invited to participate in a 10k military ruck across the city of Portland, ME to honor Cpl Mark Goyet of Westbrook, ME who died on June 28, 2011 after his unit came under attack by small arms fire in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. During this event, participants will strap weighted packs to their backs and ruck 10 (plus) kilometers around Baxter Blvd and the Eastern Promenade before confronting a rigorous O-Course by the East End Beach. This event will be open to the public and event organizers expect to accommodate between 150-250 registrants on this day.
In honor of their son, Raymond and Martha Goyet created the Corporal Mark Goyet Memorial Foundation, Inc which invests their efforts in support of military communities across the nation. All proceeds from this event will be donated to this foundation in full. In 2016, the Corporal Mark Goyet Memorial Foundation, Inc will award multiple scholarships to Southern Maine students using the proceeds raised by the students, staff, and faculty of the University of Southern Maine over the course of this coming year.
The people of Maine have always been such tremendous supporters of military communities everywhere. It is this steadfast devotion that ultimately creates such an incredible difference in the lives of our service members and all who have been affected by the ongoing conflicts around the world. By helping us fulfill this mission, we continue to demonstrate the same qualities which Mark personified over the course of his lifetime. We continue to serve a greater purpose, and by facing these challenges, Mark lives on through the course of our action.
This incredible group of people came together to raise $11,179 for the Corporal Mark Goyet Memorial Foundation. What an honor to be there. Husky Ruck Memorial 10k
